as West Germany until after the 1990 World Cup - see also East Germany.

In 2018 Germany lost more than one group stage match for the first time in a World Cup and it was the first time they had been eliminated in the first round of the World Cup since 1938. In doing so they also became the third defending champions in a row to not progress beyond the group stage.
